Existentialism

We stand in the midst of urban reality, surrounded by glossy images of success that the city and the spirit of the times present as desirable. In the face of these polished facades, we often feel isolated, aware of our own flaws, weaknesses, and rugged humanity. At the same time, these ideals distract us from seriously addressing our own problems; instead of confronting our inner conflicts and challenges, we become trapped in a reality that diverts us from taking action on what truly matters.

In this series of images, I aim to personify existential loneliness; the awareness that, ultimately, everything is up to oneself.

Through the use of black and white and shadows, I seek to visualize the struggle between the meaninglessness of life and our flight from this realization. The black and white represent the contrast between the inevitable darkness, the meaninglessness, and the quest for meaning and light. The shadows in my works serve as a metaphor for the inner struggle and sense of isolation that accompanies confronting one’s own existential freedom. A portrayal of men who bear the burden of their own existence. Or as Helge Ingstad (1977:12) put it: "[...] men who are used to helping themselves."
